The Tooth Fairy Is Coming!

UPDATE:  I offered to make these for my friends on Facebook and after a surprising amount of interest, I decided to sell these tooth fairy pillows in my etsy shop

Tomorrow, Ethan is going to lose his very first tooth.  Unfortuntely, it won't be the old fashioned way.  He has to have it pulled.  He is so excited to finally lose a tooth that he doesn't care how it comes out!

I wanted to make him something to put under his pillow where he could store his tooth and make the "exchange" with the Tooth Fairy.  I also knew I wanted to incorporate a zipper into the little pouch because I thought it resembled teeth.

I wrote a little note to put inside the "tooth pouch" from the Tooth Fairy.  It says, "Dear Ethan, I hear that I will be making a visit to your house soon.  Put this under your pillow and I will trade you a tooth for a surprise.  Love, The Tooth Fairy."

I am going to have the dentist give this to pillow to Ethan after he is finished up in the chair.  I'm going to ask her to tell him that the Tooth Fairy stopped by and asked her to give this pillow to him.  Hopefully, she won't mind telling him a little white lie.

Ethan requested that we read "Throw Your Tooth on the Roof" tomorrow.  It is the cutest book ever!  It teaches kids about all the different traditions from all over the world of what children do with their teeth when they lose them.  The thought never crossed my mind that kids did anything other than put their teeth under their pillow for the Tooth Fairy.  Boy, was I living under a rock!

Now I want to know what your tradition is.  Do you give money in exchange for a tooth?  If so, what is the going rate these days?  Do you keep the old baby teeth?  (I'm thinking I probably won't.)  I thought it would be fun to either put a $2 bill inside the pouch or maybe a gold coin (something unusual).

I look forward to hearing your traditions!

  1. SOOOOO cute!! What a great pouch! And the zipper real does look like teeth! What a fun idea!

Our tooth fairy tradition usually starts with the tooth fairy forgetting to come the first night, and having to pay double the next. lol! :) Have fun!

  2. My daughter swallowed her first tooth! It had been hanging by a thread for days but she wouldn't pull on it. She was inconsolable about missing out on the tooth fairy - but the tooth fairy did come and left her a letter explaining that she knew about all baby teeth, under a pillow or not! Our tooth fairy always left a coin (just one) and binned the tooth!

  3. Being a sentimental sod I kept her first tooth in a keepsake box along with some other bits like her hospital baby wrist band and baby photo book. Our tooth fairy leaves a note and a "Big" coin, size not value lol I'm loving it while it still lasts :)

  4. Our kids put a tooth in a glass of water on the kitchen table and overnight it turned into coins. My sister told her kids that she forgot to sign up for the tooth fairy at the hospital when they were born, but the tooth fairy came anyway and surprised them!

  5. Such a cute pouch! And poor lil guy, having teeth pulled is no fun - I had more than 1/2 of my baby teeth pulled by the dentist, they just did not want to come out! Needless to say, I'm not a fan of the dentist to this day...

  7. Great bag!!! Tooth fairy always left 2 quarters....and the boys were always thrilled. And this tooth fairy still has all of their teeth, and they are 3 teenagers now!!!! Have no idea what will ever become of them. Embellishments on a quilt perhaps?!!!! :)

  8. Very cute. :) When the kids were younger, the Tooth Fairy left 2 quarters. For their older molars recently (middle school and up), since the teeth are bigger, she leaves a "gold" Sacagawea dollar coin. Or a president dollar coin.

  9. Very cute pouch! We used to get $1-2 coins as kids. But our tooth fairy wasn't very reliable at coming lol... I guess I'll have to think of what to do for my kids when they start losing their teeth soon.

  10. i love the zipper!! so very clever of you! we give a gold dollar, sprinkle fairy dust & leave a note. the girls have written long notes asking for pictures, too. it gets wild around here. i've kept the teeth so far, but will see what they want to do with them when they don't believe any more. they may think it's gross. come to think of it, it kind of is a bit gross.

  12. As a kid I loved visits from the Tooth Fairy. I became a little dubious when her handwritten notes resembled my mother’s grocery lists. I found this website and have used it with each of my kids. You can create a photo of your child with the image of the Tooth Fairy. Its fun to use and the kids love it. The best part is, it really helps keep the magic alive! www.mytoothfairypictures.com

  13. That pillow is awesome! I'm LOVING the zippered mouth!!

I hope all went well with the tooth appointment. My daughter had to have one cut out from under her gum line. General anesthetic, outpatient surgery!! The people at the hospital gave us a piece of paper certifying for the tooth fairy that this was a "hospital tooth". The tooth fairy left her $20 for that one. :)

  15. Hmm... the pouch idea was nice. If you're asking what I did when my adopted son lose his first tooth, I just gave him the toy that he always wanted for us to celebrate his first lost tooth.

  16. Love this cute pillow! My Mom had a pillow that she passed on to me for our kids. The tooth fairy pays a $2 bill on our boys first teeth and then its down to 4 quarters for the other teeth. I linked to your post from our blog!

  17. Wow! Talk about excited. Haha! It's really a nice experience to witness your son getting his tooth pulled. You are indeed an exciting mom, especially about the tooth fairy’s visit. Haha! So, how did the experience go?

  18. Awww! That is just so cute! How did it go? It's really a great moment when your son loses his first tooth. It’s like he’s slowly making his transition towards growing up. This is one of those precious motherhood moments we don’t want to miss. That pouch is really cute by the way. :D
